I’ve been surrounded by beauty products for as long as I can remember. Growing up in South Georgia meant big hair and pretty faces. My mom lingered around in the 80s trends for a while well into the 90s. She loved, and still loves, bright pink blush and blue eyeliner. Let’s not forget about the teased bangs plastered with hairspray. When I hit middle school and acne hit me in the face, I started picking out my own makeup…which mainly consisted of dark eyeliner, terribly lined lips, and tragic attempts to cover the acne. It got better as the years went by and I became old enough to discover beauty store dreams like Ulta and Sephora. And, let me tell you, I found myself going to browse around just for fun. As the autoimmune issues developed, my skin became increasingly sensitive. My eyes burned like crazy everyday until I would take my makeup off. This is where my journey with natural beauty products started to take shape.
It started with mascara. I knew the mascara was causing my eyes to burn. Being ever curious, I knew it was time to do some research. I started by looking into mascara products and was shocked…SHOCKED….to discover some of the ingredients. No wonder my eyes were on fire! One thing led to another and before long I was researching all of the products in my makeup bag. I also discovered a super useful tool called Skin Deep, which allows you to search lots of beauty products to see the toxicity level. Please check it out if you’re interested in natural beauty products! Over time, I’ve slowly made better decisions when it comes to beauty products. It was not something I was able to do all at once. Product by product I have made changes to my beauty routine. Has it been a magical cure to all of my skin issues? No! But I can tell you that my skin is in much better shape, and I can rest easy knowing that my beauty products aren’t causing an already disrupted immune system more harm.
To start, I am going to go back to where it all started…mascara! Here are a few of my favorite mascaras for you to try:
